Department is debating whether to license a paid AI detector for faculty use or stick with the free tier of available tools. our budget request is being scrutinized. faculty are split on whether the paid versions actually do anything more than the free ones for academic writing detection. anyone done a side by side comparison with academic content specifically
Did a controlled comparison last semester on 200 papers (100 known human, 100 known AI-assisted with documented prompts). Tested 4 detectors at free and paid tiers: 1) Free tiers consistently capped at ~250 words per check. Useless for paper-length analysis. You can chunk but accuracy suffers from chunking. 2) Paid tiers had ~12% higher accuracy on academic prose specifically. The gap was driven entirely by paid tiers being recently updated for academic writing styles. 3) Proofademic and one other detector that markets to academia specifically outperformed general-purpose paid detectors by another 8 points on the test set. Domain specialization matters. 4) All detectors have false positive rates between 6-18%. None are reliable enough to use as definitive evidence in academic integrity cases. If you’re going to license something, license academic-domain specific tools. The faculty debate should be about which paid tool, not whether to pay. The free tiers are non-starters for academic use at any scale. But also: detector outputs should never be the sole basis for integrity decisions, regardless of price tier.
Confirming Marc’s finding on academic-specific detectors. We tested similar combinations at our district last year and the academic-targeted tools had meaningfully better discrimination on student writing patterns specifically.
as a grad student id rather my department spend the money on writing center staffing than detector licenses. the false positive rates marc mentioned create real harm. detection isnt teaching writing.
@Marc_Delrieu the academic-specific tool finding is the data point i needed for the budget conversation. also @SophieB_92’s point about writing center funding is fair and im going to raise it. the detector budget might be better spent there.
