Are there any free AI detectors that arent garbage

Broke student. need to check my own essays before submitting to make sure they dont get me in trouble. cant pay 30 dollars a month for a single detector. the free tiers ive tried are either crippled or unreliable. is there anything actually usable for free in 2026

Honestly the most reliable free option ive seen students use is Proofademic’s free tier, it gives sentence-level scoring without paywall on essays under a certain length and that’s enough for self-checking before submitting. dont fall into the trap of running through 6 different ‘free’ ones and averaging, that just creates anxiety

The free tiers on the bigger paid tools are usually crippled below useful word counts. better to use one free thing well than six poorly

@JonahHex99 perfect, will use that one specifically. thanks

also if you have university library access many libraries have institutional licenses on plagiarism/AI tools. worth asking, students often dont know.

General note for students reading this thread: free tier output is fine for self-checking but dont rely on it for a final ‘i submitted this and got 5%’ confidence. the paid tier scores on the same text can differ enough that your prof’s licensed copy could give a different result.

And if your school provides a free institutional license, USE THAT one. the score the institution sees is what matters when something gets flagged. checking against a different free tool tells you very little about what theyre seeing.
