What counts as a fair authorship trail for students?

I’m a teacher and I keep running into the same messy situation: a student submits something decent, I get that gut-check moment (“is this text ai generated”), and then it turns into a debate about *process* instead of the work itself.

I don’t want witch hunts. I also don’t want a world where honest students get penalized because their writing is clean, or because they used a tool for brainstorming.

So here’s what I’m trying to define for my own class: what counts as a **fair authorship trail**?

Not “prove you didn’t use AI” (that’s impossible). More like: show me a believable path from idea → draft → revision. Some students can do that naturally. Others can’t, even when they wrote it themselves. And yes, students also ask me “can teachers tell when you use ai” like it’s a yes/no question. It isn’t.

As a student, I’d prefer a simple rule: *show your steps*.

Like: submit one messy draft + a final + 5 bullet points on what changed and why. That’s doable even if you write on paper first. If someone used AI heavily, the reflection is where it gets awkward fast.

I’m nervous about “change logs” becoming theater. People will learn to manufacture drafts.

A short voice-note reflection (30–60 seconds) might be harder to fake. Not impossible. But harder. Also it centers the student’s actual thinking, which is what you want anyway.

Maybe require an in-class micro task: write a paragraph from the same topic, no tools. If the submitted essay and the in-class paragraph feel like different humans… then you ask questions. If they match, cool.

Authorship trail should be lightweight and routine, not triggered only by suspicion.
Policy idea: everyone submits (1) outline, (2) draft, (3) final, (4) a 6–8 sentence process note. If they used AI, they state where (ideas, structure, sentence-level rewrites) and what they kept.

Normalizing it reduces the shame + reduces lying.
