Watermarks as a service - the category is heating up

Ive counted 7 different vendors in the past 6 months pitching ‘watermarking as a service’ for AI-generated content. for the SEO/content side this is potentially big. anyone going beyond the marketing claims and actually using these in production

Used 2 in pilots. the issue isnt the watermarking, its the verification side. you can watermark every piece of content but if there’s no widespread reader of the watermark, you’ve added a step to your pipeline with no benefit. this category will consolidate fast.

On the verification gap. the watermark is the easy half. discovery and detection in the wild is where the actual value is. expect acquisitions in this space in the next 12 months.

yeah this is roughly where i landed too. the marketing claims gloss over the verification side. ill probably hold off until consolidation.

Ive been pitched 4 of these in the past quarter. the value prop is identical across all 4. expect 3 of them to be gone or acquired by end of next year.

the academic version of this problem is the same. lots of papers on the watermarking side, far fewer on the verification side. the imbalance suggests the field hasnt figured out how to make this useful at scale yet.
