We publish photos to instagram, twitter, and linkedin and every single platform strips exif and any embedded provenance metadata on upload. no provenance survives the upload-display cycle. workarounds? specifically interested in solutions that work for editorial publishing where we need provenance preserved end-to-end
Three working approaches for editorial: 1) Watermark approach. Embed visible attribution + a QR code linking to a provenance page. Survives any stripping because its visual content. Tradeoff: aesthetic and takes screen real estate. 2) Companion landing page. Host the original signed image on your own infrastructure with a permanent URL. Social posts link to it. Users who want provenance can click through. 3) Off-platform distribution. For high-stakes content (investigative photos, exclusive images) distribute through provenance-preserving channels first (your own site, partner editorial sites that preserve c2pa) before social. Social becomes amplification, not the primary surface. Most editorial teams use a combination. We use 2 for everything and 1+3 for high-stakes content. Theres no clean solution while social platforms keep stripping - the workarounds are the answer.
The companion landing page approach is also what we recommend to agency clients. SEO bonus: the landing page accumulates backlinks and signals over time, which helps the brand more than the social post.
From a research angle, the persistence of metadata stripping by social platforms is essentially a market failure. Platforms benefit from making content uniform and ungovernable. Regulatory pressure (EU AI Act provisions on AI labeling) may force changes by 2027 but the current solution is the workarounds @CyberVortex described.
@CyberVortex deploying option 2 across our content this quarter. landing page per published image was on our roadmap and this thread is convincing me to prioritize it.
